Pondering with a Purpose - How do you show love?

Think on ThursdayWelcome to Pondering with a Purpose -
This is my weekly hop where I post a prompt and you get to write to it on your blog - come back here and add it to my linky and then we all get to go read what you wrote!

I started Pondering with a Purpose because -- simply put -- I am a writer - - that is what I do (I just can't help myself)! And although I love following all the hops, I wanted to see if I could bring out some creativity in not only myself, but some of my blogger friends as well.

The rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in my sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt
3. Post something on your blog that relates to the prompt - it can be a story, a poem, a picture -- anything you want it to be.
4. Come back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list below.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt is:                             Showing Love

What is your favorite thing to do to show love?

You know the old adage - actions speak louder than words. Well saying "I Love You" is one thing, but I think that it is critical that those around use know we love them. As children we are taught to 'love one another'.... but that is not the kind of love I'm talking about.
If you could never utter those words again, would your loved ones know you love them?

Dance Me to the End of LoveWhen you are in love with someone you cannot stop thinking about them. You become a part of them and they of you.

Sometimes showing love can be as simple as a phone call in the middle of the day or a touch as you pass by each other. But what about love that is not a romantic love? Do the same rules apply? My answer…. Absolutely! I love picking up the phone and hearing one of my kids on the other end, or having the ability to pick up the phone and tell them that I love them and am thinking of them. When they were younger and were living at home I would do special things to show my love.

There were always notes packed in with the lunches.
I made sure there favorite clothes were always clean.
I would make favorite meals – even if I didn’t care for them.
I allowed friends to come over because I knew that would make them happier.
I listened to everything they ever had to say.
When they were sick they got to choose whatever they wanted from the grocery store.

Coeur ChaletI guess what I did was give them a safe, warm environment to grow up in … and isn’t that the greatest expression of love available?

Oh yeah... and that old saying, "Love means never having to say you're sorry."  Sorry --- I completely disagree with that! I think love means having the ability to admit that you're wrong and made a mistake and still continue on.....

How about you?
I'd love a comment, or a linked up post... or better yet... BOTH!

Happy Pondering

Ferry Tails - Chapter 6

As Robin's quest continues.... so goes her saga....
Enjoy this continuing tale of Ferry Tails.....

Six

The phone ringing woke her from a drowsy haze. She glanced at that clock and noticed it was 10:30 PM. Fear immediately crept into her, even before she answered the phone. There must be something wrong with my father. “Hello?”
“Robin?” a male voice came across the receiver.
“Yes?” She answered in a sleepy voice.
“I’m sorry, did I wake you up?”
“Who . . . who is this?” She asked, now aware that it must not have anything to do with her father.
A chuckle over the phone, “Sorry, this is Scott Andrews.”
“Who?” She asked.
“We had dinner a couple of weeks ago and I had told you I would call you later that week.”
Recognition forced the sleepiness out of her mind as she sat up in her bed. “Scott?” She asked.
“Yeah. I’m really sorry I didn’t call you sooner. You’ll never believe what happened.”
“Uh-huh,” she said into the phone trying to gain her composure.
“My car was impounded.”
“What?” She asked coming fully awake now.
“When I went home after our dinner I parked in a tow away zone and didn’t realize it. My car was impounded and all of the information I had on you was locked in the car. It was on a piece of paper on the front seat.”
“Okay,” Robin said, stifling a yawn.
“I’m so sorry Robin, did I wake you up?”
“Uh-huh,” she said.
“Would you rather I call you back tomorrow?”
Robin’s heart began beating rapidly, “No, it’s okay; I’m up now.”
“Good!” He exclaimed. “I’m really sorry that I didn’t get back to you when I said I would. It’s not like me to be so flaky.”
“Okay,” she responded.
“Can I please have another chance? I know I don’t deserve it, but I really couldn’t control what happened.”
“Okay,” she said, yawning again.
“Great! Thank you.” He exclaimed. “I’ll call you tomorrow afternoon. Promise.”
“Okay,” she said again and hung up.

Waking up in the morning Robin wondered if the phone call had been a dream or reality. When the phone rang just after six o’clock she recognized the voice.
“Hi!” He said.
“Hello,” She responded.
“I am truly sorry I didn’t call you sooner.”
“It’s okay,” She said, “things happen.”
“Are you free for dinner Friday night?”
“I need to see if I can get a sitter,” She replied.
“No,” He said, “let’s do dinner with your kids. I’d love to meet them.”
“Are you sure?” She asked. This was not what she’d expected. It was only their second date.
“Yeah, I’d really like to meet your kids and I know this is short notice for you to get a sitter. We can go grab a pizza and see a movie.”
“That sounds great!”
When a grey car pulled into the driveway Bruce came running in from the front yard, “Mom! There’s someone here!
“I know sweetheart,” Robin said, trying to stay calm. “We’re going to have dinner with a friend of mine.”
“Really?” Bruce asked jumping up and down. “His car is so big!”
Angel walked into the living room and asked, “Who is he Mom?”
“Here, let’s let him come into the house and then I will introduce both of you to him.”
Robin opened the door and took one look at Scott. Her breath caught in her throat. She let him in. Angel and Bruce were watching closely to see what was going to happen. “Scott, this is Angel and Bruce. Angel and Bruce, this is Scott.”
Scott held out his hand to shake their hands. “It’s my pleasure to meet you both. I’ve heard so much about you.”
Angel and Bruce both smiled broadly as they shook his hand.
“Are you hungry?”
“Yes.”
“Yes I am,” Bruce said. “Can we go get pizza?”
“We can do that!” Scott answered. “How about you Angel, does pizza sound good to you?”
Angel just nodded her acquiescence.
Robin spoke up and said, “Bruce we need to get you into some clean clothes.” Turning towards Scott she said, “Do you mind if I take a couple of minutes to get him ready?”
“No, not at all; take your time.”
Angel followed Bruce and Robin down the hallway to Bruce’s room. “Mom, who is he?”
“He’s just a friend,” Robin answered.
“Is he your boyfriend?”
Robin blushed, “No. He’s just a friend.”
Bruce said, “He has a really big car!”
“It’s not that big, is it?” Robin asked.
“All of us could fit in the back seat. That is a big car!”
Robin laughed, “Do you think we should all sit in the back seat together?”
“That would be fun!” Angel smiled. “Normally Bruce is in the back seat all by himself.”
“How about if Bruce and I take the back seat and you sit in the front seat with Scott?” Robin asked Angel.
“That would be good.”
“Can we go to Chuck E Cheese?” Bruce asked.
“I don’t know, let me see if that’s okay with Scott,” Robin answered.
“Why do we need to ask him?” Angel wanted to know.
“Sweetheart he has come over here to meet you and take us out for pizza and movie. I think it’s important that he agree to where we go. Okay?”
Angel scuffed her foot on the ground, “Okay.”
Robin looked crookedly at her daughter but didn’t say anything.

Bruce raced into the living room and asked Scott, “Can we go to Chuck E Cheese? Please?”
Scott looked over Bruce’s head towards Robin and answered, “Sure we can go anywhere you want to go.”
“Yay!” Bruce said and then looked at Angel and said, “See! He’s okay with Chuck E. Cheese.”
Robin interceded, “You ready to go?”
“Yup!”
“I am!”
“Yes I am,” Scott smiled at her.
Angel sat in the front seat while Bruce and Robin got into the back seat. Although Scott looked confused he didn’t say anything.

“I had a great time!” Scott said as he leaned against the front door.
“Really?” Robin asked. “Listening to my kids squabble and bicker about everything?”
“It was fine, really. I wish I had more time with my son as he was growing up. Perhaps this is my second chance.” He leaned over for a kiss.
As their lips touched Robin was sure she felt sparks. When his touch gingerly went to meet hers she was more than willing to meet his. Warmth spread through her body like melted butter running through her veins. She lifted her right leg as she leaned in closer. Scott’s arms wrapped around her waist as her arms wrapped around his neck.

Friday follows - advice and FFFin

It is the first Friday for the official kickoff for summer.... yay!!!!

I have so much news I am bursting at the seams... but that can wait until Six Word Saturday.... today is all about Friendship Friday and Friday Four Fill in ....

So on Friendship Friday
over at Create with Joy my friend Ramona has asked the question: what is the best/worst advise you have ever been given... I have to say that I just started to laugh when I heard this one because in my case it is definitely a two edged sword.....

Being a writer.... I will lay out the parameters for you.....

Wedding rings, elevated viewI was married in September of 1986 to my very own Prince Charming... my wedding was a blur
and then I ended up being married with absolutely NO idea what to do when he wasn't happy with EVERYTHING I did....
In November 1987 I was in a very bad car crash and ended up being at home for over six weeks. I found out what my husband was doing all day and let's just leave it with... it wasn't what you would expect from someone who owned their own business.
I called my mother and told her I needed to get out because this was not what I had expected. The advise????
"Marriage is not easy and you need to stay and make it work....."
So... I gave in... and made my marriage work... on his terms.
May 1989 my oldest was born
May 1990 my second was born
Jan 1992 my baby was born

July 1994 I finally had enough courage to leave... and who did I call for help??? Well my mother of course and she welcomed me with open arms.
But does anyone really know what happens in a six year marriage???? Only the people involved...

Worst Advice: Staying
Best Advice: Staying - otherwise I would not have the three wonderful children that I do.

For those of you who have read Private Scars... you will recognize the sentence above... .....

I sincerely hope the advice that I am going to read about on all of your blogs is much better!!!!

NOW.... on to happier topics
My friend Hilary over at Feeling Beachie has a weekly hop where we get to fill in the blanks.... please go check it out.

These are the questions for the week: my answers are underlined

Pondering with a Purpose- Most Comfortable

Welcome to Pondering with a Purpose -

Think on Thursday

Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  What are you most comfortable in?

Can you believe that people actually walk around on 5 inch heels? (Hilary?)... I mean ... seriously.. .how do they not fall flat on their faces? When you ask, some respond..... that is the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn... REALLY??? Then why is it that as soon as you walk in the door you kick your shoes off?
Personally I love all these new styles of shoes, but I don't own any of them.... I will be darned if I'm going to walk around in pain all day on 5 inch heels just because it is fashionable!

How about you? Do you wear things that are completely uncomfortable just so you can look good?
And, what is the thing you are the most comfortable in? As for me... when it comes to my feet NOTHING is better than anything... no matter what. And then of course when it is cold, there is nothing like a pair of warm fuzzy slippers. As far as the rest of the outfit goes --- if I want to be totally comfortable --- it is a tank top - (no bra) and a pair of pajama pants --- if it is cold I'll put on a sweatshirt.

Twenty five years ago I would have said sweats - but now they are just too darn hot! I have found that as the metabolism (nice way to say hormones) in my body has changed my wardrobe had to change with it. There was not one day you would find me without a sweatshirt on - the bigger and bulkier the better! Now? I don't even remember the last time I wore one.

I'd love to know what you're most comfortable in....
Write me a comment, or link up ... or better yet... Both!

Happy Pondering.

Here are 100 words to pique your interest:

After a few minutes, he looked up at me and smiled, Squeezing my hand, he said in a husky voice, “that was once of the best days of my life. I knew I had made her proud. I’ve been trying to recreate that feeling since then. I wanted to make the world proud by doing something significant. Now, I’m dying, and I don’t know exactly what I’ve accomplished.” Dad cleared his throat, and I knew the moment was over. I couldn’t think of anything to say. Patting his hand a little awkwardly, I got up from the table and cleared…

Coffee Chat - Stuck in an Elevator

Today is Tuesday and it is time for Coffee Chat with Time Out For Mom.... but before we go there...
PLEASE go show some love to the reviewer on today's stop .... Dollycas . . She has a great site and the review is wonderful as well....

OK....

Today's topic is all about getting stuck in an elevator and who you would want to be stuck with and who you definitely don't want to be stuck with!

Richard Dean Anderson - MacGyverWell.... getting stuck with someone is easy ---- MacGyver ....

then he could get us out! But seriously, I think getting stuck in an elevator has to be right on the top of most people's "Things I hope never happens to me" list. My favorite people in the world are my kids... but now that they are grown and starting families of their own I'm not sure I'm their favorite person anymore and they would just be pining for their families if we were stuck without them. So, I suppose.... hold onto your hats..... I would say my mother. That way if something went terribly wrong I would be able to say good-bye.

NOW.... who I wouldn't want to be stuck with?
Let's see....
Someone who is claustrophobic
Someone who is a drama queen
Someone with a grating voice
Someone who hadn't taken a shower that morning
An elevator FULL of people
Someone with a heart condition.

How about you?  Ever have these strange thoughts running through your mind (Leslie, where DID this one come from???)

Happy Tuesday all!

Ferry Tails - End of Chapter 5

The week whizzed by. Robin tried to be patient but could not understand why by Thursday she had not heard from Scott. He had assured her that he had a good time and was going to call. She climbed under her covers and buried her head in her pillow. Involuntarily tears began to flow.
What is wrong with me? I didn’t even cry like this when Lance left. Then she heard that little voice in her head say, “You’re crying because you’re tired of being alone. Why don’t you just call him?”
“Mommy?”
Robin pulled herself out of her pillow to see the silhouette of Bruce standing next to her bed. “What’s wrong sweetheart?” She asked, brushing the tears away.
“I had a bad dream and when I called you you didn’t come.”
Guilt crept in and immediately Robin realized her priorities were her children, not her own happiness. “I’m so sorry. I guess I didn’t hear you.” She pulled her covers aside and patted the bed, “Come on up and tell me all about the dream.”
Bruce crawled in between her sheets and snuggled right next to his mother. “There was a huge bird coming out of the sky. His eyes were red and fire was coming out of its mouth.”
“Wow, that does sound scary,” She said rubbing his back.
“I tried to find my sling shot but when I reached into my back pocket it was gone. So then I looked around for a rock so that I could throw that at him. By the time I found one he was right above my head. The flames were shooting and it was really hot.” He burrowed in deeper. “I just picked up the rock when I woke up.”
She squeezed him and calmly spoke. “I’m glad you woke up before you had to hit him with the rock.”
“I know I could’ve killed him.”
“Me too,” she said.
“Mommy?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you think that bird was going to eat me?”
She thought about it as she rubbed his back. “No, I don’t think that you would taste very good. You’re too skinny.”
“Maybe he thought I was a mouse.”
“Well hitting him with a rock would certainly have shown him otherwise,” Robin said.
“Can I stay in here?”
“For a little while,” she answered.

When they both woke up again it was time to get ready for school and work. Bruce didn’t remember coming into his mom’s room and didn’t remember any of the dream. But Robin couldn’t get it out of her head. Why would her six year old be afraid of demons from the sky? And was it a sign of things to come?
“I’ll be here to pick you up right after school and we’ll go to Chuckie Cheese’s for dinner.”
Bruce said, “But I thought that’s what we were going to do for my birthday and it’s not ready yet.”
She hugged Angel and Bruce and said, “I know, but I decided that I love you both so much that we should do something special just the three of us. It’s Friday and we don’t need to get to bed early or do any homework.”
“You’re the best mom in the world!” Angel said as she hugged her goodbye.
“I love you Mommy,” Bruce said as he hugged her and ran off to play with his friends.
Robin got back into her car and thought, “What was I thinking? I’m not lonely when I have them. Who needs a man anyway?”

The Car Thief - A Book Review

Originally published in 1973, The Car Thief by Theodore Weesner has been republished by Astor + Blue Editions.
From the back cover: The Car Thief is acclaimed as “one of the best coming-of-age novels of the Twentieth Century.” Theodore Weesner’s modern American classic is now re-launched for a new generation of readers to discover.
Set in Detroit in circa. 1959, sixteen year-old Alex Housman has just stolen his fourteenth car and frankly doesn’t know why. His divorced, alcoholic, working class father grinds out the night shift at the local Chevy Plant looking forward to the flask in his glove compartment.
Fighting to survive, Alex and his father face the tough realities of estrangement, youth detention, and even violence as their lives hurtle towards the climactic episode that the New York Times hailed as “…one of the most profoundly powerful in American fiction.”

I am not sure how this publisher found me. I didn’t really matter to me… they sent me an email asking me if I was interested in reading and reviewing this novel and after reading the above caption I was in. What interested me the most was to see if a novel, written in 1973, touted as one of the best…. Could stand up to today’s writing styles.
Mr. Weesner has definitely written a masterpiece. The fact that it was written thirty nine years ago does nothing to diminish the characters, ambience and sheer cruelty of growing up in less than ideal conditions. Alex Housman is nothing less than a troubled youth and yet he is just so likeable! He has no idea what compelled him to do what he did, but the path he set into motion from his actions altered his life forever.
After reading a short bio on Mr. Weeser you can’t help but wonder…. Fact or fiction?

I highly recommend The Car Thief. It is one ride you will not soon forget.

This book was sent to me from the publisher for an unbiased review. There has been no compensation of any kind.

Pondering with a Purpose - Favorite Color

Welcome to Pondering with a Purpose -

Think on Thursday
This is my weekly hop where I post a prompt and you get to write to it on your blog - come back here and add it to my linky and then we all get to go read what you wrote!

I started Pondering with a Purpose because -- simply put -- I am a writer - - that is what I do (I just can't help myself)! And although I love following all the hops, I wanted to see if I could bring out some creativity in not only myself, but some of my blogger friends as well.

The rules are really easy:

2. Look at the week's prompt

4. Come back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list below.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Favorite Color

This is probably one of the questions that gets asked on every questioner... What is your favorite color?
Well, I remember hearing a long time ago someone answer it with ... My favorite color to wear is ..... and my favorite color to live in is....

S
O
Artist's Palette Smeared with Used Water Color Paintsnow that I am over the hump and on the second half of my life I can answer these questions any way I want to...especially since I am the one who posed the question....

When I was a kid my answer would simply have been: Blue!
Now.... I'm not really so sure... I love the color green and there is a joke between my kids and myself about buying a set of sheets... the reason ... "Well they're green!" But when I was growing up I was told never to wear green because it would make me look green   ---- where do these things come from????? I look great in green!

BUT....it is not by any means my favorite color to wear. I really love wearing the color black... but my oldest brother told me .... now mind you this was in 1994 ..... "You need to wear something other than black!!!!"  I'm not really sure that is true anymore... everyone wears black.. all of the time!!! Personally, I own 7 pair of black boots --- let's not even talk about the rest of the black shoes in my closet (wink, wink).

Farbstudie Quadrate, c.1913 Buy This at Allposters.com
But I do so love the color blue --- and I'm not necessarily partial to any particular shade thereof. In fact, the downstairs of my house has four different shades of blue on the walls..... I figured if I lived by the beach the house should look like it! But my bedroom? Well... it is two different shades of green with brown curtains..... I guess it makes me feel more earthy! BUT when it came time for the other rooms in the house... well they are purple and green.. YES... I decided it was time to get out of the rut of having a white house...

Buy This at Allposters.com
As for the outside? Well,. I haven't gotten there yet.... only been here for three years... The goal ---- White with hunter green trim, or Two different shades of blue... not sure yet! Of course blue with a gray trim sounds pretty good too.....

How about you?  What are your favorites?

I'd love it if you would leave a comment or write a post and link up... or better yet... both!

Happy Pondering!!!

Dead End Deal - A Book Review

I was asked by the publisher of Dead End Deal if I would consider reading and reviewing this book. When they sent me this explanation, I knew it was right up my alley!

World renowned neurosurgeon Jon Ritter is on the verge of a medical breakthrough that will change the world. His groundbreaking surgical treatment, using transplanted non-human stem cells, is set to eradicate the scourge of Alzheimer’s disease and give hope to millions. But when the procedure is slated for testing, it all comes to an abrupt and terrifying halt. Ritter’s colleague is gunned down and Ritter himself is threatened by a radical anti-abortion group that not only claims responsibility, but promises more of the same. Faced with a dangerous reality but determined to succeed, Ritter turns to his long-time colleague, corporate biotech CEO Richard Stillman, for help. Together, they conspire to conduct a clandestine clinical trial in Seoul, Korea. But the danger is more determined, and more lethal, than Ritter could have imagined. After successful surgical trials, Ritter and his allies are thrown into a horrifying nightmare scenario: The trial patients have been murdered and Ritter is the number one suspect. Aided by his beautiful lab assistant, Yeonhee, Ritter flees the country, now the target of an international manhunt involving Interpol, the FBI, zealous fanatics and a coldly efficient assassin. Dead End Deal is a fast paced, heart-pounding, and sophisticated thriller. Penned by master neurosurgeon, Allen Wyler—who often draws from experience and actual events when writing—Dead End Deal is unmatched as a technical procedural. Its medical and scientific details can impress even the most seasoned medical practitioners. And yet, the fascinating expertise is seamlessly woven into a riveting plot, with enough action and surprises to engross even the most well-read thriller enthusiast. A smart, unique, page-turner, Dead End Deal delivers.

Allen Wyler manages to explain complex scientific situations in plain English. His descriptive characterizations of greed, poverty, struggles and the plain old fashioned will to survive make the pages turn themselves. The story in an of itself is nothing new: Greedy CEO who needs a sure fire bet. Nerdy scientist who trusts everyone. Foreign consulate that can do nothing for an American. A vicious, methodic murdering madman chasing everyone! BUT this novel manages to take all of these factors and string them together with ease and poetry. The words flow as the story unfolds to a quite unexpected ending.

I am definitely going to seek out Allen Wyler's other works after reading this one!

Ferry Tails - Chapter Five - first half

The waitress placed the check on the table and Scott reached into his pocket and pulled out a full money clip. He peeled off a one hundred dollar bill and put it on the tray. Looking at Diane he asked, “You ready?”
Diane nodded. She just saw someone pay more for dinner than she budgeted for food for two weeks. She had no idea it was going to be that expensive. “I’m really sorry,” she said.
Puzzled he asked, “For what?”
“I had no idea it would be that expensive.”
Smiling he responded, “Not a problem, I did.”
She stood up and he ushered her through the front door. “Should I take you back to your car?” She looked up at him as he was clearly over six foot two and towered over her she just smiled. “Or would you prefer to walk around for a bit?”
“That would be nice,” she said.
He put his arm around her shoulders and they walked through the tiny shopping mall. She kept thinking that this could not possibly be happening to her. He was such a nice guy. After thirty minutes of walking they had managed to make it back to his car. He held the door open for her to get in. When he had settled himself in the driver’s seat he said, “I’ll take you back to your car.”
“Okay,” she said, and they drove in silence.
Pulling up next to her tattered old Volvo, he got out and raced around to help her out of her seat. She fumbled for her keys and unlocked her door. “Thank you for coming to meet me,” He said. “I really enjoyed your company.”
She responded, “I had a very nice time, thank you.”
He leaned over to kiss her.
Electricity soared throughout her entire body as their lips touched. He had placed his arms around her waist and she wrapped her arms around his neck. It felt as if that kiss lasted forever. She opened her eyes and looked into his. “I’m really glad we met,” she said.
“Me too,” he responded. “Can I call you again?”
“Yes,” she answered softly as he came back in for another kiss.
“I really hate to see this night end,” he whispered in her ear.
“Me too,” she said, “but I need to get home to the sitter.”
“Okay.”
He closed her car door as she settled in. She tried to put the key in the ignition but had to consciously stop her hand from shaking. Scott’s kiss had sent wild sensations throughout her body and had awakened something within her she didn’t even know existed. Glancing towards his car she saw him get into the driver’s seat and put his key in the ignition. She started her car and drove away.

Friday's Follows - Beachie and Childhood memories

PhotobucketI am hanging out on two of my favorite spots today.... First I went to visit Hilary at Feeling Beachie she has a weekly hop - Follow Friday Four Fill In... Each week she give 4 statements and we fill in the blanks and check out what everyone else said..   You really should check her out!

1.       In the summer there are WAY too many people here!
2.       I always drink coffee when I check my email in the morning__
3.       Reading romance novels makes me lonely
4.       I like to live near the ocean because  _I love the sound of fog horns____

And then I am hopping along with Ramona at Create With Joy for Friendship Friday....

This week the subject is Childhood memories.
I really had to rack my brain for some of these... I don't really remember much about my childhood - what is that they say? You block out the bad memories? My parents split up and eventually divorced when I was 7-9 --- and then it was step mother, step father, step brothers and one half brother.... (Yup... all boys!)
I was a great student - got good grades and didn't even really have to try very hard (please don't hate me!) --- I think I must have put all my energy into school.. I don't remember having any friends after elementary school - oh I'm sure I had some, but none that I would call my 'best' friend. I'm pretty sure I used books to escape....
AND then my childhood started all over again when I became a mother.... seeing the world through a child's eye is amazing. I'm not even sure where half the stuff I came up with came from....

We would take walks and follow the ants... (now who does that?)
I helped build numerous castles out of cushions and blankets....
We huddled around an old floor heater for heat in the winter
Macaroni and Cheese became a staple of their lives.....
Bedtime stories were a must!

and now they are all out on their own.... I wonder what their childhood memories are

AND as an added feature... check out Aloha Friday....
Local Sugar Hawaii

Happy Friday to all!!!

Pondering with a Purpose - Comfort Food

Have fun!

This Week's prompt:  Comfort Food

I remember hearing about comfort food sometime in my thirties (wow... does that seem like a long time ago).... so is that a catch phrase or something that came into 'fashion'?

Fifteen years ago I would have said that my comfort food was a chocolate milk shake and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (crunchy peanut butter, of course!) PB&J

BUT then when I thought about what my comfort foods were when I was a teenager I distinctly remember sitting in front of All My Children with a bag of Doritos chips and Mint n Chip ice cream...

NO... I did not dip the chips into the ice cream.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken at the South City KitchenNow? I would have to say that when I am seriously needing comfort it is either fried chicken or a taco. SO... do you think comfort foods change as we change?

I do.... I'm not sure if I would be caught dead today eating a bag of Doritos, forget sitting down with a carton of ice cream.... AND my inkling is more towards a vanilla milkshake than a chocolate one. Why do you think that is? OH... and I still love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches... but the bread is what makes the sandwich and I'll be darned if I can recall what kind of bread my mother used to buy.

The other thing that ALWAYS brings me right back down to earth is a good old fashioned Banquet Chicken Pot Pie... not that I've had one in years... (and I do mean years as my children tended more towards the Marie Callendars brand).... but for some reason I remember those pot pies as being a staple of my youth.

Hmmmm... I wonder what my kids' comfort foods are and why I've never asked them this question......

All this food talk is making me hungry.... What's your comfort food?

I'd love it if you left a comment, or wrote a post and linked up.. or better yet... Both!

Happy Pondering!!!

Wordless Wednesday - I love this vase!

This is the kind of vase flowers USED to come in when they were sent from a florist.... Funny... but I never put flowers in it ... I just love it though... don't you?

Coffee Chat - Music to my Ears

Tuesday ... Coffee Chat .... Leslie's place....

This week the subject is music.

Music used to be a much bigger part of my life than it is today. I remember growing up with Simon and Garfunkel, Donavon, the Beatles... .but then none of those were particularly my choice... they were what my older brother listened to. AND he was big into the stereo equipment and speakers.....

Then I went to college and Billy Joel, Cat Stevens and James Taylor came with me... I was always playing music.... Then my boyfriend introduced me to Michael Franks and Stephen Bishop.... I was hooked.

Of course when the kids came along we went right into kid song.... I still sing Baby Balooga to my kids... and then all the Disney songs.

I don't know that I ever came up with my own taste in music until I was all alone and discovered country.... and it was love at first sound. I have sort of been hooked ever since and that is what is always on my radio in the car. BUT then I do so love Adele... I mean who wouldn't and then there are the songs I over hear from my kids and fall in love with them too... Nickelback, Backstreet Boys, Ashlee Simpson....  Does that make it bad because my taste is so all over the board???

When I decided to move away from everything I had ever known (3 years ago) I used Rascall Flatts Moving On as my personal theme song. So unlike my wonderful host, I'm not sure that music really drives me, or makes that much difference in my life... it is sort of background noise..

Stop on by Leslie's and see what everyone else thinks.

Monday Morning Musings - May Gray

PemaquidI don't know about you but the weather seems to affect my mood. When it is extremely hot I am misreable... when it is extremely cold I love it... when the sun is shining and the temperature outside is in the 60 degrees (Fahrenheit) range I am in heaven.  I have been reading a lot about the weather patterns of late and I have to say they are completely confusing to me.  There is El Nino, La Nina and now La Nada.... So anyone who knows a bit of Spanish knows that one is a boy, one is a girl and one is nothing!

All I know is that when I was younger you could pretty much count on the weather matching the season.... NOW?? Well, let's see.... we've had a lot of rain in April (April showers bring the flowers that bloom in May) - - so I suppose that works. We had virtually NO days of temperatures lower than 35 degrees (hmmmm... I remember colder winters when I was younger).... and now?? Well now we have May Gray --- who comes up with these names?

I live on the coast so I am quite used to fog... in fact that is why I moved here... I love fog. But this is NOT fog! This is just gray skies all day... I would be so much happier if it would just rain! and after May we get to look forward to June Gloom.... another full month of 'low marine layers' --- Seriously? People go to school to learn to speak this way?

Bouquet of roses On another front... my war on weeds..... I think I'm winning even though it is very difficult to tell. I made a commitment to myself to pick them once a day and try and fill up a grocery bag... .that is been happening now for ten plus days.... There are still plenty of weeds out there... but not as many as I started with! Who knows, but September I might actually have a lawn!!

Buy This at Allposters.com

I have also decided to kick up my war on snails... this after Trixy decided she wanted to play with one --- on my carpet! so now every morning I go snail hunting!!!

So... when did life become so mundane that Monday's musings consisted of weather, weeds and snails?

How was your weekend?

Ferry Tails - Chapter 4.5

The saga of Ferry Tails continues with the end of Chapter 4:

“I’ve had tempura. Does that count?”
He laughed. “Of course it does!” He took the chuck of wasabi and mixed it in a bowl with soy sauce. As he stirred it together he said, “This is wasabi, a mixture of horseradish and mustard seed. It is very similar to hot mustard. As I mix the soy sauce in, it will lessen the sharpness. You dip the sashimi and anago into this mixture and it heightens their flavors.”
“Okay,” she said.
When he had finished mixing he took his chop sticks and picked up a piece of sashimi. “Here let me show you.” He dipped the raw fish into the mixture and reached across the table to feed Diane.
She opened her mouth and took the fish. This was not like anything she’d ever tasted before. The mix between sweet and spicy hot was amazing. Her eyes opened as she chewed and swallowed.
“What’d you think?”
“Amazing,” she answered. “I can see why people like this.”
“Is the wasabi too hot?”
“No I don’t think so,” she answered. “It tasted pretty good to me.”
“Good,” he smiled at her. “Here we need to finish this sake,” and he poured the remnants of the hot tea holder into their cups.
She drank it but did notice that it really did not taste as good now that it was no longer hot. Her thought processes had definitely slowed down since she walked into the restaurant and she subconsciously knew that she needed to get some food inside her. She was not a big drinker but remembered her father hammering home the message that drinking without eating was just a recipe for disaster. She tried to balance the chop sticks in her hand but they did not cooperate.
“Hold one like a pencil,” she heard Scott say. “And then take the other one between your thumb and forefinger. As the first one rests on your middle finger, the top one will act as a handle.”
She did as he said and it worked. Carefully she picked up a piece of sashimi and dipped it into the brown sauce. She led it to her mouth and a new taste hit her tongue. This piece of fish was not as sweet as the first one. It was also much chewier. As she chewed the wasabi made it’s way up her nasal passages and her eyes watered.
“Too much wasabi?” Scott laughed. As the waitress delivered their rolls, he ordered another carafe of sake. He then explained to Robin what had just been delivered. “This is what most people think of when they think of sushi. This is spicy tuna, this is a dynamite roll and this is a spider roll.”
Robin noticed that the same eel shaped things covered one of the rolls. The other one was rolled in tiny orange seeds. “What’s on the outside of this one?” She asked pointing to the orange one.
“Flying fish eggs,” he said. “They really have no taste, but have a great sensation in your mouth!”
Robin grabbed a piece of the roll and dipped it into the wasabi mixture and then placed it in her mouth. As she chewed she understood what he was talking about. It was like biting into soft strawberry seeds. “I like that!” She said.
A wide grin took over Scott’s face as he said, “I am so glad.”
Robin concentrated on eating and spoke very little. When the second bottle of sake arrived she said, “I think I’ve had enough.”
“Oh?” He asked.
“Yeah, I’m not really much of a drinker and the first bottle has definitely clouded my judgment.”
He nodded, “Okay.”
