This Week's prompt: Practical or not?
Are you surrounded by practical things and have left no room in your life for whimsy? If you are like me, you have struggled for most of your life just to put food on the table, pay the rent each month, make sure the electicity does not get turned off and anything extra in your pocket goes to those you love, not yourself .... WHAT this does not fit you?
I found that I would always look at things that I wanted and justify some reason not to get them. For example, I have always loved the hanging baskets that hold fruit and vegetables in a kitchen but never thought enough about them to get them... after all, my fruits and vegetables work just fine in my refrigerator... why do I need something else? Then when Michelle came home she said, "Get them, they can't be that expensive..." so... now this is what my kitchen window looks like:

and NO you are not seeing double... I bought 2!!!
AND I always wanted a wishing well in my front yard... but never figured it was justifiable. When I went to look for one I discovered a windmill instead... NOW seriously... how impractical is that? But you know what... (and even my kids said, "Why are doing this when you are talking about moving in the next three years?") ... I LOVE IT!!! It is just quirky enough to make my backyard more enjoyable. AND once my kids got into it they were the ones that came up with painting it... I would have left it natural... but it is much cuter in the colors we did... don't you think? To see ALL the pics go to:This post
Now... here is the most ridiculous one I have EVER heard of.... we recently discovered sweet tea and realizing how easy it is to make I said, "Let's make it, it will be less expensive and then we can have it any time we want it." Great... right???? I don't own a pitcher!!
So how about you... do you live in the world practicality or do you enjoy the small things that brighten up your life?
I'd love to read your post about this... and your comments... or better yet... Both!
Happy Pondering!

I love the windmill and I used to have those baskets. I used them all the time but they started to rust on me so I discarded them when I moved and haven't replaced them yet.
ReplyDeleteMy problem with those baskets is trying to figure out what will keep in them... so far the potatoes don't work... onions get bad too fast... kiwis just hardened...
DeleteI live on a tight budget, but when I see something that will brighten my little corner of the world, I get it, and have never regretted it. Maybe, I have to do without something else for awhile, but that's o.k. That windmill will bring you happiness.
ReplyDeleteI rarely regret it either... I do regret NOT getting something I talked myself out of many years ago.... if only... :)
DeleteI think of all of the knick knacks in my house and wonder how much more travel money I would have except that I had so much pleasure collecting these treasures and making my house look lovely. If only we had 20/20 vision into the future.
ReplyDeletelol... aint that the truth!
DeleteI certainly enjoy surrounding myself with pretty things,
ReplyDeleteeven if they have no other purpose than looking pretty,
and collecting dust...
;D~

oh... I think I should find a dust collecting cup and send it to you!
DeleteThanks!! Got enough of my own...
DeleteBut a little splurge can only do you some good
and I'm looking forward to your windmill's eventual relocation.
I expect pictures, of course!!
:)~

the before and after pictures are on the wordless wednesay post... including the final location! (as well as the flowers planted around it)
DeleteSorry I am late coming in today...
ReplyDeleteyou have a whole week... I'm just glad you join!
DeleteThis topic is a familiar one, the difference between needs and wants and realizing that a few wants are essential to make us smile now and then. I LOVE your windmill, it is whimsical and fun, and the pleasure it will bring you each time you look at it far outweighs the splurge... enjoy!
ReplyDeletesometimes I believe that the wants that get put on the shelf end up changing over time anyway so perhaps it is all for the best.
DeleteI do like your windmill, Brenda, and your fruit baskets :)
ReplyDeleteI tend to be more practical these days and honestly, the money you'll save making sweet tea, even if you have to buy a pitcher, will be worth it! Hubby makes just regular iced tea and it is so economical to do so!
betty
practicality is really not that bad! It allows the occasional splurge!
DeleteI am a sweet tea addict make it all the time, I love the hanging baskets we really are kindred spirits I have always looked longingly at the baskets in my ex-sister-in-laws kitchen but never would spend money on getting my own I asked her about them and she said they are tricky on what to put in them so it kept me from getting them for me even more. Once we moved up in the foothills I found myself buying all kinds of cute yard things with no regrets so YOU ENJOY that windmill I think it is adorable and a good buy!!
ReplyDeleteshare the recipe please... we haven't gotten it down quite right yet!
DeleteAND the baskets were not that expensive - $15 from bed, bath and beyond (I was surprised!) but am trying to figure out what to put in them.
I'm very much like you were I always say that the kids need something more than I do. Good thing my hubby spoils me and surprises me with things I would like but wouldn't get for myself. Love your windmill.
ReplyDeleteI think that is what happens when we become mothers... their needs and wants come first. It was always hard to say no to one of those sad, "I really, really, really want this!" look
DeleteSuch a busy day....it's almost midnight and I just getting here. A busy full of doing boring and practical things like groceries, laundry and halloween shopping (ok, buying the kids' costumes was fun). Our life revolves around the practical - that's the price we pay for my staying home and only having 1 salary. I remember days of whimsy though. I miss whimsy. :(
ReplyDeleteIf we want something extra/expensive - like my new laptop - it means DH has to work overtime. so he isn't around as much. That's the trade off. Mostly....we only buy what we need. I can't remember the last time we bought something just because.
Your whimsy will come back as the expenses of three little ones goes away. I remember the days of keeping my fingers crossed that I would have enough money for groceries... forget shoes!
