Well I am certainly off to a late start for this Tuesday... (don't even get me started....) BUT... I could not go through this day without joining my online sis for Coffee Chat.

Leslie at Time out for Mom hosts a weekly meme - Coffee chat --- she wants us all to grab a cup of coffee, sit around and talk about the same thing...This week: Trick or Treat!
What is the greatest prank ever pulled? Either done by you, done to you...or just really impressive.
Or.
Share your favourite halloween recipe. Spooky spider cookies? Ghoulish ghoulash? Or even how you eat your pumpkin seeds. You do eat the seeds, right?
It wouldn't be MY blog if I didn't take this totally into the other direction.....
when I was little (no not when the dinosaurs roamed the earth) I lived in a very friendly neighborhood... or so I thought. My older brothers and I would go out trick or treating by ourselves until the year that someone decided it was a great idea to put razor blades inside of fresh apples. My entire Trick or Treating experience was never the same after that.... We had to have a parent chaperone us (my mom was not into this at all!!! and my dad was not around)
When we got back home the bags had to be dumped on the table and sorted. Anything without a wrapper or that came from someone's kitchen went directly into the trash can! AND then the house on the end of the street had a nasty remark cut into their lawn with salt (yes.... salt does kill grass)....
I suppose that killed the tradition for me... until I had children of my own... I will never forget Jared getting dressed up as a dragon and having the foot of his costume keep falling off his foot so he was dragging his tail and his foot.....
OR Randy dressed up as a Lion... or Michelle dressed up as a ballerina (including a pacifier in her mouth)!
Whatever happened to those days? when it was all innocent fun? Maybe one day the good will outweigh bad and this will come back (but probably not in my life time)
AS a footnote.... I hope all my blogging friends who live or have family or friends in the path of Sandy are safe and out of harms' way. I cannot even begin to imagine that type of a nightmare.
It is too bad that someone has to take the fun out of childrens events. I remember the razor event as well.
ReplyDeletethere will always be evil in the world.. but that even seemed the change everything!
DeleteI can still remember trying to convince my mom that the rice krispie treats and caramel corn balls that had an address label attached to the bag should be perfectly safe!! What was I thinking? She worked in a maximum security prison!!! Nothing was getting past her.
ReplyDeleteIt is too bad that some sicko spoiled it for generations of kids later. But there are some good alternatives out there these days. The churches in my town host an event and every child gets a bag of candy. They have games, bouncy castle, etc. It's nice for the community.
Glad you joined my sis! Remember - linky is open all week so never any rush!
xo
I took my kids to a couple of those 'harvesty' events when they were little... NOthing like a single mom walking three kids around the neighborhood!~
DeleteLOL with RoryBore's comment about the homemade treats. We had neighbor ladies who would lovingly make something to share, caramel corn balls, cookies, cupcakes, caramel apples. After the razor blades and whatnot, I always felt sorry for them having to give that up, something they probably so enjoyed doing. We would have some when I was growing up that would bring the things by to our house the day before and then say they wouldn't be home to pass out treats but wanted to give us something. Since obviously we knew them, we could eat the treats.
ReplyDeleteI too remember going through candy bags sorting out anything that looked suspicious.
I do believe those days won't come back, but I do like that churches, schools, etc. that put on harvest festivals, carnivals etc. that are putting some of the fun back into the day.
betty
I too like the fact that the communities have picked up for the 'unsafeness' of it all..
DeleteI miss homemade goodies!! My lil grandson is going as a dragon he was suppose to be a lion but they switched it last minute.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a fun Halloween.
definitely want to see the pictures... Mine is batman!
DeleteWE still check candy today!!!! The only homemade goodies had to come from neighbors we knew personally, not "Jo Schmo" three doors up.
ReplyDeleteThis year, the parents really stepped up and made sure the kids all had an adult or two in the group... even for the older kids. :-)
