It is Friday and I am once again joining my friend Ramona over at Create with Joy for Friendship Friday. I have made so many friends from this hop!!!!
This week Ramona wants us to reflect on our favorite vacation and it is so funny that this subject should come up the day after I wrote a post about My life....
I was a single mother and was raising 3 children on a very tight budget and I will never forget when I decided it was time for us to take a vacation together..... SO .... living in southern California has definite advantages. I decided that we should embark upon an adventure and take the train from Los Angeles to San Diego and go visit Sea World. My kids were 7,6, and 4 at the time. We took the train and then took a shuttle to our hotel. We all shared one room and I remember that all the kids wanted to do was go in the pool... so we did! The next morning we got up very early and took the bus to Sea World and let me tell you.

... they had so much fun!!!! We were back in the hotel by 6 - but it didn't matter.....
The next day we took the bus into some other area of town and then caught the train back home. We had so much fun that we planned the same trip for the following year with a brother of mine, his two kids and my father and step mother. (Let's just say that the vacation was nowhere near as great!)
Two years later I drove down to San Diego and we tried it again...it was fun, but not the same!
AND then we discovered cruising. (I have to thank my mother for this one!)
My favorite vacation of all time is when we went on a 7 day cruise in Alaska. We flew to Seattle - my kids had never been on a plane before (now they were 15, 14 and 12) - and we actually spent 7 whole days together. What I remember the most - besides the fact that I am in love with Alaska - is that this was the first time in all our lives that we had actually been able to spend 7 days - consecutively - together. They were always at the father's on the weekends and during the week they were in school.
Not only did I fall in the love with the state of Alaska,

but I fell back in love with my kids. So much so that I booked a cruise for the following year to Hawaii -- looking back on it I realize that the magic only happens the first time and although the Hawaiian cruise was fun it wasn't "all that". I still say that I would love to retire to Alaska some day --- me, the dog and the computer (as long as I have a fireplace I'm set!)
How about you? Any vacation memories... or plans?
Hop on over to Ramona's and see what everyone else has to say.. I know I'm going to!

ReplyDeleteI did and thanks for stopping by... I love your site!
DeleteWow. I am amazed at all those exotic vacations! Isn't it amazing how sometimes a spontaneous trip just is amazingly fun and then when you try to make it happen, no magic at all? Glad you got to enjoy your kiddos anew. ALaska ---sounds so wonderful...
ReplyDeletethat is funny... I don't think of them as exotic... I'd love to see Europe! and ahhhhhhh.... alaska!

Thanks Ramona... you too!
DeleteYour vacation with the kids to Sea World that first time did sound like quite an adventure! And how fun with the cruises. But I have to agree with you; I think the first time we do something makes it so special it is sometimes hard to duplicate it the second time around. Seven years ago hubby, son and me took off for a week in DC to see my mom, sister and her family. We had such a great time; loved the area, riding the Metro, etc. We talk fondly of that trip and going back but I bet if we did, it wouldn't be the same "magic" as that trip seven years ago :)
ReplyDeletebetty
Now that sounds like a great trip too... and I think you're right. It is probably the newness of it that makes is extra special
Deletewonderful post. I love the whale picture, and southern california.
ReplyDeleteThanks SS... I'm glad to see you!
DeleteI had a good chuckle because I say the same exact thing about Alaska, as long as I have a fireplace LOL
ReplyDeleteHugs!
