The phone ringing woke her from a drowsy haze. She glanced at that clock and noticed it was 10:30 PM. Fear immediately crept into her, even before she answered the phone. There must be something wrong with my father. “Hello?”
“Robin?” a male voice came across the receiver.
“Yes?” She answered in a sleepy voice.
“I’m sorry, did I wake you up?”
“Who . . . who is this?” She asked, now aware that it must not have anything to do with her father.
A chuckle over the phone, “Sorry, this is Scott Andrews.”
“Who?” She asked.
“We had dinner a couple of weeks ago and I had told you I would call you later that week.”
Recognition forced the sleepiness out of her mind as she sat up in her bed. “Scott?” She asked.
“Yeah. I’m really sorry I didn’t call you sooner. You’ll never believe what happened.”
“Uh-huh,” she said into the phone trying to gain her composure.
“My car was impounded.”
“What?” She asked coming fully awake now.
“When I went home after our dinner I parked in a tow away zone and didn’t realize it. My car was impounded and all of the information I had on you was locked in the car. It was on a piece of paper on the front seat.”
“Okay,” Robin said, stifling a yawn.
“I’m so sorry Robin, did I wake you up?”
“Uh-huh,” she said.
“Would you rather I call you back tomorrow?”
Robin’s heart began beating rapidly, “No, it’s okay; I’m up now.”
“Good!” He exclaimed. “I’m really sorry that I didn’t get back to you when I said I would. It’s not like me to be so flaky.”
“Okay,” she responded.
“Can I please have another chance? I know I don’t deserve it, but I really couldn’t control what happened.”
“Okay,” she said, yawning again.
“Great! Thank you.” He exclaimed. “I’ll call you tomorrow afternoon. Promise.”
“Okay,” she said again and hung up.
Waking up in the morning Robin wondered if the phone call had been a dream or reality. When the phone rang just after six o’clock she recognized the voice.
“Hi!” He said.
“Hello,” She responded.
“I am truly sorry I didn’t call you sooner.”
“It’s okay,” She said, “things happen.”
“Are you free for dinner Friday night?”
“I need to see if I can get a sitter,” She replied.
“No,” He said, “let’s do dinner with your kids. I’d love to meet them.”
“Are you sure?” She asked. This was not what she’d expected. It was only their second date.
“Yeah, I’d really like to meet your kids and I know this is short notice for you to get a sitter. We can go grab a pizza and see a movie.”
“That sounds great!”
When a grey car pulled into the driveway Bruce came running in from the front yard, “Mom! There’s someone here!
“I know sweetheart,” Robin said, trying to stay calm. “We’re going to have dinner with a friend of mine.”
“Really?” Bruce asked jumping up and down. “His car is so big!”
Angel walked into the living room and asked, “Who is he Mom?”
“Here, let’s let him come into the house and then I will introduce both of you to him.”
Robin opened the door and took one look at Scott. Her breath caught in her throat. She let him in. Angel and Bruce were watching closely to see what was going to happen. “Scott, this is Angel and Bruce. Angel and Bruce, this is Scott.”
Scott held out his hand to shake their hands. “It’s my pleasure to meet you both. I’ve heard so much about you.”
Angel and Bruce both smiled broadly as they shook his hand.
“Are you hungry?”
“Yes I am,” Bruce said. “Can we go get pizza?”
“We can do that!” Scott answered. “How about you Angel, does pizza sound good to you?”
Angel just nodded her acquiescence.
Robin spoke up and said, “Bruce we need to get you into some clean clothes.” Turning towards Scott she said, “Do you mind if I take a couple of minutes to get him ready?”
“No, not at all; take your time.”
Angel followed Bruce and Robin down the hallway to Bruce’s room. “Mom, who is he?”
“He’s just a friend,” Robin answered.
“Is he your boyfriend?”
Robin blushed, “No. He’s just a friend.”
Bruce said, “He has a really big car!”
“It’s not that big, is it?” Robin asked.
“All of us could fit in the back seat. That is a big car!”
Robin laughed, “Do you think we should all sit in the back seat together?”
“That would be fun!” Angel smiled. “Normally Bruce is in the back seat all by himself.”
“How about if Bruce and I take the back seat and you sit in the front seat with Scott?” Robin asked Angel.
“That would be good.”
“Can we go to Chuck E Cheese?” Bruce asked.
“I don’t know, let me see if that’s okay with Scott,” Robin answered.
“Why do we need to ask him?” Angel wanted to know.
“Sweetheart he has come over here to meet you and take us out for pizza and movie. I think it’s important that he agree to where we go. Okay?”
Angel scuffed her foot on the ground, “Okay.”
Robin looked crookedly at her daughter but didn’t say anything.
Bruce raced into the living room and asked Scott, “Can we go to Chuck E Cheese? Please?”
Scott looked over Bruce’s head towards Robin and answered, “Sure we can go anywhere you want to go.”
“Yay!” Bruce said and then looked at Angel and said, “See! He’s okay with Chuck E. Cheese.”
Robin interceded, “You ready to go?”
“Yes I am,” Scott smiled at her.
Angel sat in the front seat while Bruce and Robin got into the back seat. Although Scott looked confused he didn’t say anything.
“I had a great time!” Scott said as he leaned against the front door.
“Really?” Robin asked. “Listening to my kids squabble and bicker about everything?”
“It was fine, really. I wish I had more time with my son as he was growing up. Perhaps this is my second chance.” He leaned over for a kiss.
As their lips touched Robin was sure she felt sparks. When his touch gingerly went to meet hers she was more than willing to meet his. Warmth spread through her body like melted butter running through her veins. She lifted her right leg as she leaned in closer. Scott’s arms wrapped around her waist as her arms wrapped around his neck.
