Mondays Musings --- Happy Earth Day!

Before I start with the regular musings I thought I would let you know......

There is an awesome review of Public Lies posted at my friend Donna's house:  My Life. One Story at a Time.: Public Lies by Brenda Youngerman
Go check it out... and thank you Donna!!!!

NOW onto the musings of the day. This weekend was Earth Day... did you do anything to celebrate? Take your own bags to the grocery store? Go to a parade? Hug a tree?

ME.... I decided it was time to get to know my front lawn a bit better.... You see I live in a small gated community and I am the first corner house. When I moved in (almost 3 years now) I was much more interested in making sure the flower beds looked great and pretty much ignored the lawn. It had weeds, but when I came home from a walk with the dogs on Saturday I noticed that there were more weeds than grass on the lawn... And not the nice weeds... but the mean one... PUNCTUREVINE!
They might look nice enough:

But when they dry up they leave behind these mean, nasty, tiny burrs that embed themselves into everything.... especially dog paws! Why is it that the snails don't eat these???
So for the first time since moving in I actually sat on my front lawn and pulled weeds. A little bit on Saturday and a little bit more on Sunday.

I figure if I tackle it a little bit a day I should have them all out of the lawn before they dry up.... so that was my contribution to earth day  :) happy

Other than that I spent most of Sunday writing. Cracked Cocoon is turning out to be a really good book! I am always amazed at what the characters tell me as they're developing.....

How was your weekend?

  1. Left Brain and I are a good mix: I tend the gardens, he obsesses over the lawn. I don't know why he bothers with 3 kids running over it almost daily all summer long.

the kids and I did our annual clean up trek around our town's fairgrounds, which is right across from our house. We got one whopper of a bad of garbage and one of recycables too. I am quite proud that they have actually requested to do this clean up for 3 years now.
If they were only as diligent and happy about picking up their toys!

    1. You have to make picking up the toys worth it! And let's face it... how many different games can you make about picking up after yourself?

  2. Congratulations!

You're right, those vines are deceptively pretty.

We ran the kids to Grandma's house for Easter vacation. (YES!!!!) She took all the big kids because we've gotta take the baby to the embassy on Wednesday to get her US Social Security number, and I'm afraid of having my own US citizenship stripped if I try to go in there with a bunch of inconsistently behaved children. : )

    1. Can they do that? I mean seriously if it were true most people would be un-citizenized! Who in their right mind has well behaved kids in a government office?

  3. Loved the review...
I can't believe that stuff in the yard!

What did you do to it?

Pinterest says spray vinegar on weeds...we did but we got hungry for salad!

This was a rainy cold week end...we read and watched movies and took a bed out of a bedroom and replaced it with a day bed...not even sure why but it was fun...I think...

    1. Daybeds are so much more fun to decorate... that's why!
As far as the weeds... I just pulled them out... I've never tried vinegar...does it work? I have this huge bottle of apple cider vinegar I bought for hot flashes (it didn't work for those!) but if I can put it to good use that would be great!

I try it on the dog pee stains and it doesn't work there either!

  4. When we moved to Iowa we also have a corner lot.....and we are in a neighborhood where you HAVE to have a nice yard or people get upset so we have a lawn maintenance contract with a really nice guy who mows and makes it all pretty. It is so worth the money---so worth it. Since the hubby travels so much it would be up to me and he said he didn't want me to have to worry about it so this is kind of like a gift to me!!! Yay!!! There are some things we have decided it is worth paying someone else to do and this is one of them. Every Thursday they come and it makes me happy!

  5. We didn't really do anything special for Earth Day... just tried to keep up with what we are doing. I take my own bags to the store with me most days but sometimes I get plastic so I have bags for poopy duty when walking the dogs... reduce, reuse, recycle!!! We try to live by this daily.

    1. Since being on poopy duty ... Muttley never did it when we went for a walk... I am so much more conscious of hanging onto my bags!

  6. I'm so terrible about taking my own bags to the store (but I do recycle). I didn't do anything for Earth Day but I saw a report on the TV about a big celebration about it at Balboa Park, does that count?

    1. Betty... it counts! And I am as bad as you about taking bags back to the store... I always remember when I am in the parking lot!
