My friend Les at Time out for Mom has a weekly coffee chat where she asks people to come on over and sit down, grab a cup of coffee and chat. This week she has given us this prompt:
You’re home alone and the power goes out, what do you do?
What a great prompt!
First of all, I’m always home alone … well unless living with a great big fluffy dog counts for anything! It used to be that this would be a much more serious occurrence when I had kids living at home, but now it is not really a big deal! Actually it happened the night before Thanksgiving and I was supposed to do a bunch of cooking.. man did that put a crimp in the plans!
Now losing power – depending upon the time of day – can be a good thing – it forces me to GET off the computer! Well, not really because my laptop runs on a battery and I can go for hours without power! So that is good for a while. But I am pretty good at amusing myself. I can always do a jigsaw puzzle – by flashlight and I do have the flashlights in handy locations. I suppose that goes back to having kids and living in a fairly large home and never wanting to be in a situation where the power went out and not being able to have a light handy. (Maybe I just knew that someday I would need to write this post!)
I also always have a book handy to read and can do that by flashlight as well. It is rather interesting in retrospect as I write this that having a loss of power is really not a big deal to me anymore! Now don’t bring any kids into my house and turn off the power – there is something about the dark and kids that just doesn’t work!!

I pray that the power comes back before the sump backup batteries die, otherwise I am emptying the basement as it begins to flood... THe downside of beach living :)
ReplyDeleteI don't even have a basement and I live at sea level---so would the basement be below the sea --- or would that be a sub - let ????
DeleteIs that a real movie poster? If so, that is being added to my list of movies Not to see! LOL
ReplyDeleteAnd you are right: I think I would take better advantage of a dark night if I did not have a house full of kids. Although, I am also trying to remember if that is how I got kids??? :)
thanks for joining in.
(I am trying to organize my posting/reading schedule this week so that I will have time to be back and ponder with you.)
I think that is a real movie poster and I have never seen it! Nor do I want to!!!!
ReplyDeleteHow did your Thanksgiving turn out?!
ReplyDeletelol.... I had to think about that or a minute.....
DeleteThe power came on late the night before so I had to scramble to get the baking done... but it came out all right.... Thank you for asking...
How was yours.... tee hee hee!!!!
they clearly were smoking crack when they built my house. we are at or slightly below sea level, so unless the TWO sump pumps are constantly going, our basement is FILLED with water.. lovely (oh, and if we dont have our whole house filter on, our water is brown and sandy!)
DeleteI have always wanted one of those headlights that are literally head lights...you strap them on and you can see everywhere. I just bought a pair of reading glasses with lights in the side...they are awesome for night time reading!!!
ReplyDeleteI bet you look cute as a bug Patty!
DeleteI have a hat that has lights in it! It works well for night reading also. Usually when the lights go out I will light a kerosine lamp.
ReplyDeleteYou know I want one of those old fashioned pot belly stoves - I'm not sure if they would radiate much light, but it would be pretty cool (well warm---)
DeleteThat movie poster definitely creeped me out. I don't like shadows. Not. One. Bit.
ReplyDeleteAh but good things lurk in the shadows... oh wait that was evil wasn't it?
DeleteI wouldn't be a happy camper without power...only because the boy would go into withdrawal from his Xbox!!! :) Not a pretty sight.
ReplyDeleteYou need to send that boy outside more!!!
